By Scott McGee
Written for my father for Father's Day sometime in the early 1980's
I want to tell the story,
Of the best friend I've had.
He is my great example,
The guy I call my dad.
One day he wed my mother,
And thus he proved great taste.
Short months from then debuted,
The challenge now he faced.
His pride in me was known,
He named me ere I came.
And when arrived my brother,
He loved him just the same.
They later added Holly,
And Dale and Linda too.
With five young kids to care for,
He had a lot to do.
And as we grew he taught us,
Love, respect and pride.
Through all my youth he was,
My leader and my guide.
He took us often camping,
Fishing and hunting too.
We learned the joy of nature,
And learned of love so true.
He taught me to save money,
Be frugal and be wise.
Lessons that helped me greatly,
In years of manly size.
And in the church he taught me,
(He showed true love indeed).
His words and counsel helped me,
Go where he could not lead.
He taught me truth and honor,
And honesty and pride.
And when at times I failed,
He held me when I cried.
So on this day for fathers,
I want to tell my dad,
Of all the friends I valued,
The greatest is my dad!
